Lissa Brown
Award-Winning author

Lissa Brown relocated to North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains after retiring from careers in teaching, public relations and marketing in New Jersey and Maryland. Since 2005 she’s been writing books, essays and short stories, building on years of professional writing as a columnist, speechwriter, newsletter editor and media relations specialist.

Her first book, Real Country: From the Fast Track to Appalachia, (written as Leslie Brunetsky) was a humorous memoir about the first eighteen months she and her partner spent in the heart of the southern mountains. After lifetimes in northern cities and the Washington, DC area, they had a lot to learn about being residents of the Bible Belt, most of it humorous and usually at their expense.

Another F-Word Cover KindleHer first novel, Family Secrets, was a young adult story about a girl growing up in a dysfunctional family and seeking mentoring from her dead grandmother. Buoyed by its success, she embarked on a story of a gay boy coming of age in the rural South. Prompted by a strong rightward shift in North Carolina’s politics, particularly as it related to LGBT rights, she penned the award-winning novel, Another F-Word. The book deals with issues of bullying, coming-out, teen suicide, and the need to remain open to positive role models and mentors who can change one’s life.

Lissa spent a year following the publication of Another F-Word traveling and speaking to a variety of groups about the seriousness of bullying of LGBT youth. She addressed church groups, professional organizations, young people’s groups, and civic and political associations to raise awareness of this problem.

Her third novel, Family of Choice, recounts the struggles of Rory Calhoun Wilson, the protagonist of Another F-Word, to overcome the effects of childhood bullying by his father and others. He realizes that he must decide whether he can forgive those who inflicted such pain on him. His future as a father and husband to his partner, Nimo, depend on his decision. He faces challenges confronted by many gay parents about the wisdom of adoption and his readiness to assume the responsibilities of fatherhood.

She is currently conducting background research in preparation for writing a fictionalized account of a case of a young lesbian who was forced to leave school because of bullying by students, teachers and administrators in the Deep South. When she needs a break from serious topics, she writes humorous essays for a variety of anthologies and publications.
